"Rocket Man” Comes to Alaska

Elton John mania stormed into Anchorage this month with two schedules shows . . . the first in Anchorage tomorrow night and the second show in Fairbanks on Thursday evening.

I’m not going but it has been fun watching this phenomenon happen all over the city. This will be the biggest thing we've had here in recent memory and it started with people camping out for three days before tickets went on sale for the performance at the Sullivan Arena on May 28. The show is part of his 2008 tour, "Rocket Man: Number Ones."

I stopped off at one of the spots where local radio station Magic 98.9 KYMG was giving away tickets, today’s spot was the Muldoon GCI Cable store. As I waited the few minutes before the drawing for two seats one thing stood out to me . . . there was no one under 40 years old stopping by for the drawing. All of us ‘old farts’ were waiting . . . laughing at what the younger kids were missing.

Elton John, the British pop star is quite the draw with the concert being sold out in about 58 minutes, according to promoters. Several thousand people braved the ‘spring like’ conditions for a shot at the tickets and those lucky enough to order online quickly found out that it was worth the wait for a chance to see this live show.

The Fairbanks show sold out in a couple of hours at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks for Thursday night. In a recent interview with Larry King, John expressed an interest in performing in all of the U.S. states where he had not yet appeared and mentioned Alaska specifically. (Vermont and Delaware were the other two.)

A second Anchorage concert was added for Friday night and that show sold out in 51 minutes. Promoters of the 2 sold-out Elton John concerts in Anchorage say they've made 200 more seats available for each of the performances at Sullivan Arena this week. They were gone within a couple of minutes. Tanya Pont of SMG of Alaska says the production crews found more seats that offered a view of the stage from parts of the arena that initially hadn't been ticketed.

Welcome to Alaska!

Enjoy your time with us Elton and thanks for many years of great music!
