Last Confederate Soldier

Image
I was sitting here tonight and remembering my friend Lewis Grizzard as I was re-reading one of his books.   Years ago we hung out many nights together at Harrison’s on Peachtree with his step brother, Ludlow Porch (Bobby Hanson).   Both were humorist and funny as hell.   Ludlow was a rather large man, huge really while Lewis and I were quite skinny back then.   Sitting at the bar or at a table the three of us looked a strange sight.   The laughter and stories are probably why I enjoy my Saturday breakfast so much; it reminds me of those nights. The internet is a great thing as I looked I found several YouTube pieces from Lewis’ comedy albums or concerts.   I listened to them and I cannot stop laughing and honestly a few tears remembering those times.   It’s hard to believe Lewis has been gone almost 20 years now and Ludlow just over a year. Keeping my Southern heritage alive and well I share one of my favorite stories, “The Last Confederate Soldi...

Fishin' - Cullowhee - The Video

A friend of mine had sent me a couple of CD’s of music and video’s from a concert reunion of some old friends I used to hang out with almost every night when I lived in Atlanta Georgia . They played in many clubs all over the south east and I flew them up to Louisville Kentucky during Derby week for concerts there. The group was called ‘Cullowhee’ named from a small town in the mountains of western North Carolina where most of the members went to college. The guys played together for over 10 years and sadly for many of their friends and fans finally decided to give it up as a full time endeavor in 1985. Friendship lasts forever and from time to time since the group went their different ways the guys have gotten together for several reunion concerts in Atlanta and in North Carolina . The last concert was during the fall at Western Carolina University on September 27, 2008. They have posted some of the songs on YouTube which is great since they ...

I Guess I’m still a Southerner at Heart

I grew up most of my life living in the South and moved north from Atlanta in 1995. One of those Southern traits and traditions dear to my heart was while eating one meal the people sitting around the table would start discussing the next meal. I think it helped the food digest since it was always that way from the time I was a little boy. Food is so much a part of being Southern. It has driven men in wars, in love, and in making you feel cooler than the actual outside temperature. That is one reason why iced tea and mint juleps are so popular. Every Southern man loves homemade biscuits and red-eye gravy, grits drowning in butter, and a huge slab of bacon with dark hash browns . . . the Waffle House way, scattered, smothered, and covered. For those unfamiliar with Waffle House terminology, “scattered” means spread out on the flat griddle and cooked on both sides, instead of cooked in a ring and similar to a cake. Light refers to the degree of doneness, meaning n...
