Doctor Dolittle Day - Day 5

Doctor Dolittle Day - Day 5 – – Part 1

The day of the trip I have been waiting for . . . the long drive through the Canadian Rockies and the possibility of seeing the wildlife that we have seen signs along the side of the road for the last several days.

There are many signs stating this or that are crossing the road over the next so many miles or kilometers that you start to think it is a hoax put there by the different Bureau’s of Tourism. We have seen the signs . . . but not to many animals so far. There was the occasional deer in Idaho, a few elk in Montana, and the fox or beaver in Canada so far. We have seen a moose or two but since they cannot read they were not crossing the road where the signs indicated. Go figure.

We depart Ft. Nelson around 7:30 am waiting until the restaurant opened for a quick breakfast and coffee before we head out. It is not long before we are heading into the mountains and start the long climb up towards Stone Mountain and Summit Lake.

The views were incredible as we made our way up the mountainside and Charlie and I stopped to take a couple of pictures at an overlook close to the summit.

The clouds contrasting against the bright blue sky was nice and the crispness in the air before the sun’s rays warmed things made the stop a quick one as there were so many miles still ahead of us.

The decent down the mountain brought us our first encounter . . . there was a large Caribou standing in the road as we came around a curve. We braked and as the gap closed between us he started off the highway into the high grass alongside the road. We stopped . . . the Caribou stopped . . . and we looked at each other for about 25 seconds before he slowly walked into the woods.

About 15 minutes later we turn another corner and there is a cow (female) and a calf (baby) moose crossing the road in front of us. They happily jogged across and stopped to watch us snap a few pictures.

Another 10 minutes and the hillside had more caribou running and playing on the hillside.

A lone caribou was standing at the top of the hill and was silhouetted by the blue sky.

We drove past Summit Lake and the pretty scene of Muncho Lake.

And more caribou along the way.

This will end the first part of the Day 5 adventure through the mountains. There are just too many more pictures to go so more to come . . .
