Cancun Snorkeling Excursion

Wednesday – Isla Mujeres – August 20, 2008

Everyone woke up for an early breakfast before heading out to catch the bus for the marina where we would be going by boat to the island called Isla Mujeres. We went to another Palace Resort on the island where we were able to access everything there and also eat, drink, and swim. We first arrived and changed boats to go snorkeling out on a reef several miles away.

Beach Snorkeling

This excursion had 14 people who were guided on a fantastic snorkeling trip. The water was warm there were many tropical fish all around us as the guides brought hardened rolls to feed the fish so several hundred fish were swimming with us looking for food.

Where the boat dropped us allowed the current to drift everyone about a mile and a half along a reef where we could see many species of fish.

The gentle current gave plenty of time to follow the fish, see turtles, or look at the coral below the surface. We saw tiger and parrot fish, grouper, barracuda, and clown (Nemo) fish. The many types of coral with the different sea creatures clinging to them made for a spectacular mix of colors and textures. The only bad thing was that it was over to quickly as we would have stayed in the water longer.

Back at the Isla Palace we rested in hammocks with a little nap before lunch. There was a slight breeze which took some of the hotness away from us as everyone welcomed the quiet time with the soft Caribbean music playing along the beach a few yards away from us.

We decided not to swim in the pool and went inside for a nice buffet lunch before the boat was going to take everyone into town for shopping.

We found a few items we were looking for this trip . . . fish plates for my wife’s coworkers but not much else. We would go back later to another place where we found things before by the Beach Palace. Scott, Kim, and the kids met back up with us before we took the boat back to the mainland to catch our return bus back to the Moon Palace.

The hour boat ride back was another entertaining time from the crew. The music, the banter with everyone was fun for everyone. We were on the top deck enjoying the sun and the breeze while marveling at the beautiful aqua blue water.

There was a British family we had been talking too over the last several days who were with us on the snorkeling excursion and the boat ride back. They were nice and this was their third trip to the Moon Palace. The come in the summer for two weeks and hit most of the excursions, the different restaurants, and the many activities found within the compound,

Once we returned to the Moon Palace we took our belongings to the rooms and headed down for a nice dinner. Tonight was Mexican again for some fresh guacamole made tableside by on of the staff. The food was excellent and plentiful and the wandering band playing beside the tables was fun for everyone.

The kids swam again before people headed to the beach bar to relax and slow down for the evening.
