P.E.T.A. and the Chimp

I heard about an incident in Connecticut the other day that struck me with both a tragic and oddly surreal funny way. My mind works in sometimes abstract ways that looks inside out at something wanting to ponder the different possibilities.

One quick thought I had was where’s P.E.T.A. in all of this? They have something to say all the time but oddly they seem kind of quiet on this one.

Here are excerpts from the Police in Connecticut released tapes of Sandra Herold's phone call to police on Monday as her chimp, Travis, attacked Charla Nash, 55.

The chimp can be heard grunting as Ms Herold cries: "He's killing my friend . . . He ripped her apart! Shoot him!" When police arrive, an officer radios back: "We've got to get this guy out of here. He's got no face."

The chimp kept attacking Ms Nash as Ms Herold, 70, stabbed it and hit it with a shovel. Now this struck me odd as the owner of this chimp came to the realization that her pet companion did what wild animals do . . . attack and possibly eat their prey.

"He looked at me like, 'Mom, what did you do?" Ms Herold told NBC's Today Show. "It was horrific what happened and I had to do what I had to do, but still, I'll miss him for the rest of my life."

Ms Nash was in a critical condition yesterday with injuries to her face and hands. Police said they are looking into laying criminal charges.

This part is another aspect of this story that shows us just how crazy we can be with our ‘pets’. She fed him filet mignon and lobster tails. They shared cozy glasses of wine. They bathed and slept together. He tenderly brushed her hair. She gave him gifts and sweet kisses. He drew her pictures.

Then Travis decided to eat her friend . . . but only the good parts, her face and fingers. The Colonel luckily coined his phrase, “Finger Lickin’ Good” long before Travis did this commercial.

Travis the Beast evolved in the Jungle where the rule was that the fittest eat first and ask questions later. He came into civilization and was changed externally for a time. So the way Travis treated these weak and helpless women really did show his Humanity.

Animals for the Ethical Treatment of People will have to raise Chimp Awareness that eating humans is a cruel . . . oh yeah, wrong acronym.

I’m just not sure where P.E.T.A. is when things go slightly different from their brochure. I do not see the front page headlines or the MSNBC stories on what happened to make this lovable animal decide to eat someone.

Rumors that the owner possibly gave medicine to the animal only muddies the water on why this incident happened. Police said the chimp had been agitated on Monday and Ms Herold had given him the anti-anxiety drug Xanax. Emil Coccaro, the chief of psychiatry at the University of Chicago Medical Centre, said Xanax could make unstable humans aggressive.

Looks like another case of concealed carry with 45 cal ammo seemingly the only solution that works for both women and policeman who otherwise would have been Travis’s ‘Lunch Special’. Predators just hate it when the Lunch Special is properly armed.

Other possibilities . . . Did this innocent, until proven guilty, alleged attacker get “Due Process of Law”?

He could easily have resumed his cute little guy act in front of the jury and got off on self defense or his right to use violence against those who stole him from his home in Africa?

I don’t know but it could happen.
