Remembering 9/11 - Part 2

So here was my What-If thought about 911.

What if the two hijacked planes, American Flight 11 and United 175, had plunged into those north and south towers at 8:46 and 9:03, killing all aboard, causing extensive damage and significant death tolls, but neither tower had come down?

What if, as a Tribune columnist called it, photogenic "scenes of apocalypse" had not been produced?  What if, despite two gaping holes and the smoke and flames pouring out of the towers, the imagery had been closer to that of 1993 when the  World Trade Center was bombed in the basement parking lot of the hotel?   What if there had been no giant cloud of destruction capable of bringing to mind the look of "the day after" . . . no images of crumbling towers worthy of Independence Day?

Eight years later the American spirit of rebuilding had completed renovations to those twin towers and corporations would be back working away with only faint thoughts of that fateful Tuesday.  The faces seen on countless videos of that morning lost and in public and private thoughts replaced now with the hustle and bustle of a hectic work week.

Do we as a nation go back so easily to the pre-911 mentality?

It seems so and that rubs me the wrong way as the attack on America and the World that morning should have changed everyone’s core beliefs.  The fact that we have never caught Bin Laden only emphasizes the threat that still remains.

Look at the news footage and all of the faces looking upwards towards the towers and you can see the blankness on everyone.  Did it steal everyone’s emotions that we have allowed ourselves to change and not demand from our leaders a final outcome for those involved?

Have we resigned our senses to indifference or change the hand of fate like the amazing story of “Falling Man” from that tragic day?  Those are the reminders of what 911 means to many of us.

Ask yourself . . .  have we done enough to protect everyone in the future?

I think we have a start but much more is needed to bring about what is needed to have a safe and powerful Nation once again.

Just my thoughts . . .
