Fried Green Tomatoes anyone?

I have not kept up with the news lately but the times I have had a chance to either watch a news program or a quick look online there have been a couple things that stood out.

Veterans Day should not be a sad day.

Yet, in the days before America pauses to honor the men and women who have fought for this great nation, the country was forced to note the awful handiwork of two one-time soldiers who dishonored their country and their comrades.

The tragedy at Ft. Hood is one that hits hard with these fine men and women serving their country to be assaulted and killed on our home soil in a ‘secure’ environment of an Army post.  I guess it stands to reason when I was sworn in so many years ago the words “against all enemies, foreign and domestic” still rings true, today thirty nine years later.

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

Millions have spoken these or similar words upon enlistment in the Armed Forces of the United States.  Being Veterans Day it has a chilling and haunting effect on many of us who have heard about the senseless slayings and wounded warriors in Texas by a person who was supposedly one of them.

There apparently were signs of trouble brewing but nothing was done to intervene to talk and possibly prevent this tragedy.  Many people will be looking at this to make recommendations to keep it from happening again.

A little late this time but the first responder police officer gave selflessly to prevent more harm to those in gunshot range.  Our thanks and prayers are with her for that heroic effort.

It’s sad for the victims and their families who constantly deal with the loss of a loved one.  Sad that our system has so many sicko’s out there preying on everyone from children to older adults.

And . . . the “beltway sniper” from the 2002 Washington D.C. area was executed last night for the slayings of ten people and wounding three others seven years ago.  He was a one time military person who betrayed the trust of a grateful nation.

In other news of late, have you heard about the serial killer in Cleveland Ohio, Anthony Sowell, who is a tier three sex offender who previously served 15-years in prison for attempted rape and was released back in 2005.

In recent times Cleveland Police went to serve a search warrant at the residence of the 50-year-old convicted rapist last Thursday and discovered decomposing bodies.  Sowell was arrested on Saturday after an extensive manhunt . . . a tipster spotted Sowell walking about a mile from his home and alerted police.

So far 11 bodies have been found plus a skull in a trash can many of which have now been identified from missing person reports over several years.  Another breakdown of the system in not keeping tabs of these people and allowing them to roam free with no oversight to keep the public safe.

One of the things being said about Sowell is he invited people over to his driveway for BBQ where neighbors came even with the stench of death all around the house.  This struck me funny and no one seems to have picked up on it yet within the media.

It sounds like a strange twist from the book and movie, Fried Green Tomatoes where after a case of spousal abuse the husband was hit with a fry pan and the remains BBQ’ed and served up to the two detectives who were investigating the disappearance.  If I remember correctly . . . “That’s the best BBQ I think I ever tasted.”  The response was “It’s all in the recipe.”  People flocked to the Whistle Stop Café and who knows how many came by for Sowell’s special fixins’?

Just my thoughts . . .
