A Tale of two Communities – Good health on tap in Chevak - Part 2

Part 2          Good health on tap in Chevak, Alaska

As you saw in the first story about a community that is on the verge of having water and sewer service introduced into their homes will quickly change lives.

One of my engineers shown in the first story, works with many villages in western Alaska helping to bring about these changes to people off the road system in remote areas of the state.  ANTHC is a non profit company whose main entity is the Native Hospital system throughout Alaska and my part called Division of Environmental and Health and Engineering (DEHE) which is an engineering and construction company which designs and builds water and sewer systems as well as health clinics all over the state.

Even with the high cost of building these project and the many years it takes to get funding and the construction completed we have found that in the long run it is cheaper than flying by Medivac air ambulance those people in from remote areas all over the state.

Clean water and sanitation brings with it reduced incidents of common problems with respiratory and infection that comes from these ‘boardwalk’ communities.  Stagnant water and the spills from honey buckets bring with it many problems for children and adults living within these villages.

Here is part 2 of the recent story KTUU channel 2 did on our efforts to provide a healthy environment in the bush communities and highlighted two villages where we have ongoing work.

I hope you have enjoyed these stories and have a better understanding why at times it is hard for me to post while I am away from Anchorage.  We forget the nice things that we have and the instant access to information and technology but there are still places where our ‘normal’ is far from the village ‘normal’ where I travel.

Again, thanks KTUU news for sending your crews out with us to report these stories.  We hope to see you again in the future on other areas where we are changing lives.

Our mission and Vision statement is: Providing the highest quality health services in partnership with our people and the Alaska Tribal Health System.

Vision = Alaska Natives are the healthiest people in the world.

We are making progress towards these goals one village at a time, with many villages in the process of transformation.
