What a day . . . for the heating system to go on the blink!


Over the weekend the heating system in the house started acting up.  During the day time things seemed to be working but more likely it was the small amount of passive heating coming through the windows.  As the afternoon slowly waned and darkness set in around 4 pm things started to cool down inside the house.  By seven pm the temperature had dropped to 65 degrees and was not holding at the set thermostat temperature.  I swapped out the batteries in the unit since it has digital controls but it did not help so it was time to go check out the boiler.

The boiler was working as the radiant heating in the basement zone and the garage zone hydronic baseboard were hot and working.  There are three zones in the house and the upper zone control valve was not working properly.  I could manually open the valve allowing the hot water to circulate through the baseboard warming things up.  By bedtime it was about 72 degrees when I closed the valve.  By morning the temperature had dropped to about 64 degrees.  I started to manually open it back up before work but did not. 

While I was working today a cold front was moving through and while outside was about 30 degrees at 7 am it had fallen to 22 degrees by 3 o’clock in the afternoon.  Inside the house dropped to 57 degrees and was pretty cold inside while I was changing out the zone valve head.  I hoped it would be a simple fix and that once the new head was replaced the electronic actuator would operate normally and open and close as the thermostat called out.

The head is on now and the temperature is back up to 67 so things are looking good.  It is nice when something works out without too much hassle.  It is going down to 7 degrees by morning so I’m glad that it happened while I was in town and not gone for a few days.

I guess all that can be said is welcome to winter!

Let me first say that personally, I have no problem with it at all. This has been kind of a weird week here in the north land with the first of many winter snowfalls’s to come and the landscape once again beautifully covered in the white stuff. It looks like the kids will have to put their Halloween costume on over a snowsuit again this year as the cold snowy stuff is here again.
