Friday Mixed Bag of Odds and Ins

Its cold too early in the season for these temperatures so it seems somewhat strange that everyone has pretty much shut themselves inside the home hunkered down to stay warm.  Blankets are about and coffee or hot drinks available.

It’s still in November and we have had several days with below zero temperatures and for the last several days’ extreme high winds which lower the wind chill factor and also create many problems with flying debris downing power lines.  There have been many communities without power from the winds.

People seem to be staying indoors and not heading out to the normal activities usually seen on a weekend.  The area downtown is mostly barren of the throngs of people who hit the several restaurants and bars close to Town Park.  There are still the few protesters who have a small wind break tent to take turns warming up between carrying signs along 6th Avenue.

Internet activity is quiet tonight as I think many people are just happy for the break on this Friday evening since it was a pretty hectic week for many of us.  The Aces away game had those at Rumrunners but the blow out game gave the team a great win on the road.

For me I have been watching some television with some new season episodes of Alaskan programs on cable tv.  One is Flying Wild Alaska which covers Era Aviation bush pilots flying all kinds of missions into the remote airstrips or off airport landings to bring in hunters, trappers, or people who live out in the wilds.  They fly passengers, medicine, all types of cargo and supplies to those who live off the road system.  I have flown in my work with many of these pilots as I travel to the remote villages to the projects I manage.

Another one is a new program on the Weather Channel called Coast Guard Alaska.  It is about the rescue missions that the flight crews perform all over the state by the Coast Guard crews based in Kodiak Alaska.  The pilots and para-rescue swimmers fly out hundreds of miles out into the ocean or to land base emergencies.  One of the rescues was of my friend Jim’s crash in Kodiak.  Two people survived but Jim was killed getting the plane down.  The formal investigation is not over but he had called in stating he had chest pain so he may have had a massive heart attack just before getting the plane on the ground.

I have the next 10 days off from work so it will be time to relax and hopefully do some things around the house, get ready for Thanksgiving and possibly get a television for my living room.  Time will tell but for now it is nice to be in from the cold, drink in hand and warm sheet shortly once I head for bed.
