Moon Palace Golf & Spa Outing

Tuesday – Golf & Spa Day # 1 – August 19, 2008

A five AM wake up call started the day for Scott, his son Bob, Brandon (my son in law), and myself. We headed out into the darkness in search of the golf cart that was to pick us up outside our building. With a short wait with an apparent no show of the driver we walked to the office where we asked for our transportation. In the meantime our driver was waiting for us now at our building so he came back to the lobby to pick us up so we could make our tee time.

It was cooler now in the mid 80’s and in the darkness you could smell the forest fires burning in the distance. It seems that is a nightly thing to burn off areas for development while everyone is sleeping. The few minutes ride to the golf clubhouse was enjoyable as our driver showed us several Iguanas and other animals out early in the morning.

We gathered our clubs, balls, and carts and headed out to the first tee with plenty of coffee just as the sun was poking its head above the ocean to the east. We took a picture and then proceeded to tee off on the “Jungle Course”.

Scott & I were keeping score on our golf carts while Bob and Brandon played a version of ‘best ball’ depending on if they hit into the jungle or stayed on the fairway. We bogeyed the first hole and both hit our 2nd hole tee shots on the green with one slightly left of the flag (mine) and the other just short of it.

Note Scott’s tank top, he took off his ‘collar’ shirt which they promptly told him and Bob to put back on even with the heat. It’s a Gentleman’s Game you know.

We both had 20 foot puts for birdie but ended up paring the hole. There was a 6 foot Crocodile guarding the green . . .

We started off with coffee and by the second hole grabbed a beer from the drink cart to ‘cool us down’ giving him a nice tip . . . by the fourth hole the driver of the beverage cart just followed us around. It was not long until everyone was back on bottled water trying to beat the heat.

We played 9 holes on the Jungle course and then 9 holes on the dunes course giving everyone opportunity to lose balls. The Jungle course ate balls at every opportunity giving little in the way of retrieving anything while providing us many opportunities to view wildlife in its natural habitat.

By the time we arrived at the fifteenth tee we had come to the conclusion that this was a brutal course with the heat and humidity. The course was in excellent shape compared to some of the Anchorage courses where it takes all summer before the greens come into a nice playable shape without the ball hitting plug holes.

We had a great time and thought they should be giving away tee shirts that read: “I survived the Moon Palace Golf Club.”

All the girls were having their spa day treatments so they decided to come over for lunch and met us after we finished our round. Everyone had a wonderful meal and a great time so the boys headed out leaving the girls to their spa treatments.
