Gobblegate or Do you know where your Turkey comes from?

I guess there is always a bit of drama during the holiday season. Every year it seems something pops up to make things interesting. This year was no exception.

Everyone seems to be fascinated with our Governor Sarah Palin. She tried to make light of the past several months and was invited to ‘pardon’ a turkey for Thanksgiving at one of our local fresh turkey suppliers in the Mat-Su. It was supposed to be a fun outing and the pardon went without a hitch. Such footage of any governor would no doubt have drawn interest, but the continuing obsession with the former Republican vice presidential nominee sent this one into the stratosphere.

Just afterwards the media started asking questions and Palin stopped to talk for a few minutes of the political climate these last few months. The interview that followed the ceremony is being called "Gobblegate," "the interview of death," or "Silence of the Turkeys."

The video, shot by KTUU Channel 2, had 1.2 million hits on YouTube. It was prominently featured on the home pages of newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune and Denver Post. MSNBC's "Countdown" paired the video with "breaking news" headlines such as "Gov. Palin picks worst possible backdrop for TV news interview."

Maybe I’d like to think she was giving an educational lesson on where everyone’s holiday turkey comes from. Her next stop possibly could have been the pig farm down the road for a little ham and bacon footage but we’ll never know now.

The one behind her working to bring us those delicious turkeys was on the radio Friday afternoon and told us the reason he kept looking at the governor during the interview was because he wanted to hear what she was saying in case she talked about our high energy costs or possibly something on the pipeline project. He did not want to let anyone down as he had a job to do so he continued working while the interview was happening behind him. He sounded appreciative of having a job and reminded everyone who eats turkey for Thanksgiving dinner that “turkeys do not commit suicide to be on your plate!”

I can only imagine the folks at PETA stuffing their mouths this Thanksgiving while filling out the paperwork for some bogus action against the poultry farm. Many people living in the city with the ease of shopping probably forget the effort to bring them that nice bird, meat, or other food that they put into their carts. Some of us still seek out the necessity of hunting or fishing for our food and struggle to make sure our families have enough each winter.

I think its funny how many of you underestimate Governor Palin's sense of humor (I don’t think it was intentional for her backdrop during the interview) but a blast of reality for the animal rights nuts and most city folks who are more squeamish about slaughtering a bird for dinner than for people getting killed on the streets every day.

It’s crazy . . . then there is the tragedy of a Wal-Mart employee trampled to death by the idiots who wanted to shop at four AM. I can only hope in the end they felt it was worth it buying that big screen or guitar game. It’s sick really and we should all be ashamed for letting things get to this point.

For me, I slept in this weekend, enjoyed the break from work, and watched over a foot of fresh snowfall with a nice fire glowing. All without being out in the traffic or crowds, such is life.
